Iran satellite fails to reach orbit in US-criticized launch

Jan 16, 2019

TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian satellite-carrying rocket blasted off into space Tuesday, but scientists failed to put the device into orbit in a launch criticized by the United States as helping the Islamic Republic further develop its ballistic missile program. After the launch, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeated his allegation that Iran's space program could help it develop a missile capable of carrying a nuclear weapon to the mainland U.S., criticism that comes amid the Trump administration's maximalist approach against Tehran after withdrawing from the nuclear deal. Iran, which long has said it does not seek nuclear weapons, maintains...

TEHRAN, Iran — The latest on Iran's failed satellite launch into orbit on Tuesday (all times local): 1:55 a.m. The U.S. State Department is condemning Iran's failed satellite launch as an action that defies the international community. Pompeo added that that the launch "furthers Iran's ability to eventually build such a weapon." He said the U.S. is working with its partners "to counter the...

He says archaeologists uncovered ancient human remains and pottery fragments inside the tombs. They also found colorful funeral paintings on the walls of both tombs. Jan 16, 2019

CAIRO — Egypt hosted its first ever regional gas forum on Monday, with several regional delegations attending alongside the Israeli energy minister, the first such visit by an Israeli Cabinet member since its 2011 Arab Spring uprising. Speaking after attending the closed meeting in Cairo, Yuval Steinitz applauded the Egyptian initiative, saying that the discovery of gas in the eastern Mediterranean and establishing of an organization to coordinate its management help strengthen ties between the participating countries. "I think this is the most significant economic cooperation between Egypt and Israel since the signing of the peace treaty 40 years ago,"...

Saudi energy minister concerned about oil price volatility

Jan 16, 2019

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia's energy minister said Sunday that major oil producers need to do better to narrow swings in prices that dip below $60 a barrel and rise above $86. "I think what we need to do is narrow the range ... of volatility," Khalid al-Falih said. "We need to do better and the more producers that work with us, the better we're able" to do so, he told the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Forum in Abu Dhabi. Cautious not to set a price target or range, he explained there are consequences when oil prices...
