US energy secretary urges Iraq to quit dependency on Iran

Dec 12, 2018

BAGHDAD — U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry has urged Iraq to reduce its energy dependence on Iran and open its energy sector to American investment instead. Perry met with top Iraqi officials in Baghdad and in the Kurdish region on Tuesday to discuss US investment in Iraq. Iraq is caught in a delicate position as it continues to draw on Iranian gas and electricity production despite renewed U.S. sanctions against Iran's energy sector. Iraq's own energy sector cannot produce enough electricity to power the country. Perry said the U.S. and its business community were prepared to help Iraq develop its...

Iraqi cleric linked to Basra protests killed

Dec 12, 2018

BASRA, Iraq — Hundreds of Basra residents mourned a Muslim cleric on Sunday who police said was killed outside his home after he suggested that protestors should take up arms over poor public services in the city. Wissam al-Ghrawi was a prominent figure in demonstrations demanding clean water and reliable electricity in the southern Iraqi city. Basra province generates more than 90 percent of Iraq's oil exports but suffers from contaminated drinking water and regular blackouts. Basra police say al-Ghrawi was shot and killed in front of his house in the city center by unknown assailants late Saturday. Associates and...

Iran, feeling sanctions bite, looks for outlet in Iraq

Dec 12, 2018

BAGHDAD — At this year's Baghdad International Fair, Iranian businessmen displayed thick, colorful Persian rugs to impressed onlookers while others showcased the latest in Iranian manufacturing in power generators and industrial tools. For Iranian companies, the annual Baghdad International Fair is a major event, as exporters in carpets, foodstuffs and heavy equipment look to score sales in Iraq's import-dependent economy. But this year's edition, running this week, is an even bigger deal than usual: Iran, already feeling the bite of newly re-imposed unilateral U.S. sanctions, is turning to its neighbor to soak up its exports in agriculture, manufacturing and energy....

Dec 12, 2018

JERUSALEM — China's vice president and Israel's prime minister on Wednesday co-hosted a high-profile trade and innovation conference and toured an exhibition of Israeli technology start-ups together as the two countries worked to cement their fast-growing trade ties. A quarter century after establishing diplomatic relations, Israel and China have become important trade partners, with China emerging as an eager customer of Israeli technology. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Chinese government's choice to send Wang Qishan, a close confidant of President Xi Jinping, to co-chair this year's Israeli innovation summit "reflects the growing ties between our countries, our...

Israeli farmers concerned about Jordan ending land lease

Dec 12, 2018

TSOFAR, Israel — Israeli farmers on Monday voiced concern over Jordan's intention not to renew parts of its landmark peace treaty with Israel that leased out two small border areas for agriculture, as Jordanians on the other side of the border welcomed the decision. Jordan's King Abdullah II announced Sunday that he plans to pull out of annexes from the 1994 peace agreement that allowed Israel to lease Ghamr and the northern enclave of Baqura for 25 years. The leases expire next year. His decision reflects what have become cool relations between the kingdom and Israel. Last week saw a...
