Granite is a naturally occurring igneous rock. Granite is comprised of quartz, mica, feldspar and amphibole minerals and can be a variety of colours. The minerals create a interlocking grain and it is this grain that granite gets its name from.

The granite industry is one of the oldest in the world and date back as far as ancient Egypt. Ancient civilizations used granite for huge monuments such as a large sarcophagus found in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Imperial Rome also used granite in its architecture.

More modern uses of today include buildings, engineering and even as curling stones. Most uses in building projects are flooring and work surfaces in kitchens. Granite is also a popular choice more monuments and memorials, on which intricate wording and images are carved. Granite is a popular choice for homes and monuments because it it durable and can last a lifetime. It is scratch and heat resistant and a low maintenance option. When polished it is also an attractive option for the home and shows off the natural minerals such as quartz in the stone.
